What is the quickest way to stop screen sharing on iPhone?
On iPhone, screen recordings and the screen broadcasts that apps such as Zoom and GuidedView use show a red indicator at the top of the screen while they run. Apple's iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 explains how to stop a screen recording from that indicator: on an iPhone with a Dynamic Island, tap the red circle and then tap the Stop button; on other models, tap the timer highlighted in red in the top left of the screen, then tap Stop. Apple also describes a second way: open Control Center and tap the red Record button. Zoom's help center documents the same red indicator method for ending its iPhone screen broadcast, and a GuidedView broadcast can be stopped from the indicator or Control Center too. If you are sharing inside a call app, you can also end sharing from that app's own controls, covered below. After you stop, check that the red indicator is gone.
- Find the red indicator
Look at the top of the screen. On iPhones with a Dynamic Island it is a red circle; on other models it is a timer highlighted in red in the top left.
- Tap it
Tap the red circle or the red timer.
- Tap Stop
Confirm by tapping Stop. The indicator disappears when capture ends.
How do you stop sharing from Control Center?
- Open Control Center. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Find the Record button, which shows red while capture is running.
- Tap it to stop.
Control Center is also where screen recording starts, so if you only meant to check something, be careful not to tap the button twice and start a new recording.
How do you stop sharing in FaceTime, Zoom and GuidedView?
| App | How to stop sharing | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| FaceTime | Tap the screen to show the controls, tap the More button, then tap Stop next to Screen Sharing | Ending the FaceTime call also ends screen sharing |
| Zoom | Open the Zoom app and tap Stop Share, or tap the red indicator at the top left and tap Stop | Zoom shares an iPhone screen through Apple's screen broadcast |
| GuidedView | Tap Stop to end the session, or Pause to hide your screen temporarily | Your phone call is separate, so stopping does not hang up the call |
| Screen recording (no app) | Tap the red indicator and Stop, or tap the red Record button in Control Center | Nobody sees a recording unless you send it |
What is the difference between Pause and Stop in GuidedView?
GuidedView gives the customer two controls. Pause hides your screen from the agent for a moment, for example while you type a password, a verification code, payment details or a signature. While paused, the agent cannot see your screen, and only you can resume. Stop ends the session completely. To share again later, the agent sends a new invitation, because each link works only once.
GuidedView uses Apple's screen broadcast on iPhone and iPad. While GuidedView is paused, Apple's broadcast indicator may stay visible even though the agent sees nothing. If you want the indicator gone, stop the broadcast from the indicator or Control Center, which ends sharing.
What if the red indicator stays visible?
- Check whether you paused rather than stopped. In GuidedView, a paused session can keep Apple's indicator on. Tap Stop, or stop the broadcast from the indicator.
- Tap the indicator and choose Stop, or open Control Center and tap the red Record button.
- Open the app that started sharing and end the call or session there.
- Quit and reopen that app. Apple's guide suggests restarting your iPhone if an app is still unresponsive after you quit and reopen it.
- Restart your iPhone. On iPhone X and later, press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears, then drag it.
Apple says an orange indicator means an app is using the microphone, and a green indicator means an app is using the camera, or the camera and microphone. Neither one means your screen is being shared. If you see one after a call, check which app is still open.

Questions
Why is there a red circle or red timer at the top of my iPhone?
It means your screen is being recorded or broadcast. Apple shows it during screen recording, and apps that share your screen through Apple's screen broadcast, such as Zoom or GuidedView, show the same kind of red indicator. Tap it and choose Stop if you did not mean to share.
Does ending a FaceTime call stop screen sharing?
Yes. Apple's iPhone User Guide says ending a FaceTime call also ends screen sharing. To stop sharing but stay on the call, tap the screen to show the controls, tap the More button, then tap Stop next to Screen Sharing.
Will stopping screen sharing hang up my phone call?
Not with GuidedView, because the phone call runs separately from the screen sharing session. You can stop sharing and keep talking. In FaceTime, stopping screen sharing keeps the call going, but ending the call also ends sharing.
Can the other person still see my screen after I tap Stop?
In GuidedView, Stop ends the session, and the invitation link cannot be used again. The agent would need to send a new invitation, and you would have to approve it. Check that the red indicator is gone to confirm capture has ended.
What should I do if my iPhone is frozen while sharing?
Try the red indicator or Control Center first. If nothing responds, restart the iPhone: on iPhone X and later, press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears, then drag the slider.
